Beekeepers in the northern region of the state of Piauí found an innovative way to ensure income with bees. In addition to collecting honey, wax and propolis, the farmers also began to make a profit from the poison from bee stings. It produces apitoxin, anti-inflammatory component with properties that have high market value for pharmaceutical and cosmetic companies.

When entering the hive, bees are stimulated with low voltage wire to sting and secrete the venom onto glass and the toxin is then collected from the glass. Each gram is worth around US$22.00. The product is in high demand for the production of facial creams that increase skin elasticity and have won the nickname “natural Botox”.
