Brazil is going to propose the creation of the South Atlantic Whale Sanctuary duringthe next meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC), scheduled for October 2016 in Slovenia. The first step will be a seminar in November this year, sponsored by the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and involving representatives of Argentina, Uruguay and South Africa.

The other two whale sanctuaries on the planet are in the southern Indian Ocean and in the Antarctic region. The proposal, led by Brazil, will be evaluated first by the Scientific Committee of the IWC in June,and later, in October, by the plenary commission.
