SeaWorld announced it will suspend the shows of trained orcas in the San Diego Park in California. The measure will go into effect in 2016, but the company did not comment on the continuity of the shows in the park in Orlando, Florida, and San Antonio, Texas.

The Shows have been the target of criticism and lawsuits stemming from the documentary Blackfish including denouncing abuse of cetaceans being kept in small enclosures. The killer whale shows received another blow: a bill prohibiting the reproduction of the orca in captivity was presented in Congress.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, SeaWorld wants to change its image to a company known for the preservation of animals. This plan would include creating an attraction dedicated to environmental awareness and education about orcas.
