In a warning against the degradation of the Mediterranean ecosystems, the French office of environmental group WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) released a report that recommends a number of actions. These measures include the establishment of protected marine areas outside the territorial waters of countries, the regulation of maritime traffic, and the introduction of devices to prevent the collision on cetaceans threatened by intense circulation of tour vessels and the oil industry.

According to WWF-France, the expansion of offshore oil and gas exploration threatens species such as the pilot whale, orca, sperm whale and the Risso’s dolphin. The organization fears that the expansion of oil and gas production - scheduled for 60% in ten years - endangers marine wildlife, especially large aquatic mammals that live in the Mediterranean.
