Beekeepers in the Bage region of Rio Grande do Sul, are feeling the effects of the El Niño weather phenomenon. Due to heavy rains, honey production has fallen by half. In times of a good harvest, beekeepers collect 400 tons, but this year, only half is expected due to a longer rainy season than usual, which has compromised the winter crop.

Rio Grande do Sul is the Brazilian state with the highest production of honey. Exports to the United States and Europe accounts for about 80%. There, the harvest has beat the record 8000 tons in a year.
