The Politico-scientific Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES, its acronym in English), a UN panel, released a report warning of the risk to agriculture in the disappearance of bees, butterflies and other pollinating species. It said these animals are responsible for between 5% and 8% of food production on the planet.

According to the report, northwestern Europe and North America are among the critical areas. However, the problem may be greater because data was not compiled from Latin America, Asia and Africa. To preserve pollinator populations, the IPBES recommended greater protection of ecosystems, limiting the scope of intensive agriculture and research for alternatives to pesticides.
