In the state of Piaui in Brazil, beekeepers found a lucrative way to use bee venom, a product used in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. Each gram of venom powder is valued at US$22 (about R$80 reais). It is estimated that at least two grams of venom are produced from each of the 200 colonies in the region.

The collection process does no harm to the insects. A machine is connected to a box with glass plates and wiring. When bees leave their hives, they pass the wires and receive a mild electrical discharge which causes the release of their venom on the glass plates. The next step is to dry out the venom which then can be transformed into such products as a cream for skin rejuvenation.
