While investigating the death of a group of sperm whales earlier this year in Germany, scientists found large amounts of plastic in the animals’ stomachs. Among the objects found in the autopsies, there was a fishnet 13 meters in length, a car engine cover and buckets.

The deaths are being investigated by the Ministry of Environment in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The sperm whales were between 10 and 15 years old and weighed about 15 tons. Experts suspect that due to storms in the Atlantic Ocean, the mammals migrated to the North Sea, where they ingested plastic objects and ended up stranded in shallow water.
