Honey from the Pantanal region is the newest product to receive the Geographic Identification label (IG) issued by the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI). It is the first certification given for honey in Brazil. The IG seal is awarded to products with unique qualities due to natural features such as soil and vegetation. In the case of Pantanal honey, beekeeping is developed in a unique environment on the planet, that includes the maintenance and the planting of native species to the Pantanel.

Researcher Vanderlei dos Reis, from the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation, points out that the region was not identified as ideal for commercial production because the honey had a dark color and sharp odor. But with the expertise of beekeepers, the product now has more quality.
