A study from North Carolina University shows that bees living in urban areas consume more nectar from flowers than sugar from processed foods such as soft drinks and sweets. The research, which compared the insects from urban apiaries to natural hives, was done in Raleigh, the state capital, which has 440,000 inhabitants.

During the research, there was no evidence that urban bees had consumed more processed sugar than in rural areas. "This research suggests an important role of flowers and green spaces in urban areas for maintaining healthy populations of pollinators in cities," wrote Clint Penick, one of the authors of the study.
