Out of a group of 32 pilot whales, 8 died after becoming stranded in a mangrove swamp to the south of the island of Java, Indonesia. Locals from villages helped in trying to save the whales. Rescuers used tarps to try to move the stranded animals back to the sea.

Dedy Isfandi, an expert in maritime affairs and local government fishing, told the French news agency AFP that when pilot whales become sick, they usually swim close to the shore. "At first, there were only one or two in the shallow water. But since these animals have a strong collective sense, the others came to help them return to the sea and ended up getting stranding," he said.
