The season for humpback whale watching has started in the Abrolhos Marine National Park in the south of Bahia. By November, thousands of these whales will have migrated from Antarctica to the Brazilian coast, where they breed. To meet the increased demand of visitors, the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), a government agency responsible for managing the park, initiated measures to ensure that eco-tourism is done correctly.

Last week, a training course brought sailors, boat masters, tour operators, hotels owners, NGO members, volunteers and ICMBio specialists together. The objective was to update the information on humpbacks in the region and reinforce the importance of working together, both for tourism and scientific.
