The use of insecticides to fight against mosquitoes that transmit the zika virus may have been responsible for the deaths of more than 2.5 million bees in an apiary in Dorchester County, South Carolina. The cause is being investigated by researchers at Clemson University.

Beekeepers say that the insecticide Naled which kills mosquitoes with simple contact and rapid dissipation without causing damage to human beings, was used. According to the beekeepers, the chemical is usually released by truck, but this time was scattered from an airplane, without warning, which prevented them from protecting their hives.
