The main wildlife watchdog agency in the United States, the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) placed seven bee species on the list of endangered animals. Worldwide, there are about 25,000 bee species, but the decision made by the American government is a warning.

All threatened species are native to Hawaii. They are the Hylaeus anthracinus, Hylaeus longiceps, Hylaeus assimulans, Hylaeus facilis, Hylaeus hilaris, Hylaeus kuakea and Hylaeus mana. According to the FWS, the urbanization of the archipelago and the introduction of invading plants and animals caused an imbalance in the fauna.
