Since last month, specialists from the Environmental Protection Area for Right Whales, which is administered by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio), are taking turns monitoring local beaches on the coast of Santa Catarina to prevent whales from being bothered. During this period of the year when there is a higher concentration of whales in the area, it is common for people, ships and aircraft to get close to these places to take pictures.

In addition to monitoring the EPA, the institute’s job is to make tourists and residents more aware of how to treat or get closer to the whales. Vessels with engine running should not get less than 100 meters from the aquatic mammals. If the engine is off, the distance is 50 meters. For aircraft, the recommendation is to stay 100 meters from the animals.
