The main sanctuary for humpback whales in the South Atlantic, the Archipelago of Abrolhos, in southern Bahia, is the subject of a book that has just been released by photographer Marco Terranova. The publication is the result of two decades of professional expeditions to the region which the whales use for breeding, nursing calves and resting.

On each voyage, Terranova would spend 15 days aboard a sailboat in search of the best angles to record the humpbacks. Often, to approach the animals, he used a small inflatable boat. "This cannot be done aggressively, there is legislation that needs to be followed," explains the photographer.
