Minister of Environment, Sarney Filho made an official invitation to the International Whaling Commission for the next plenary meeting to take place in Brazil in 2018. It will be another opportunity for countries advocating the creation of a South Atlantic whale sanctuary to see if they can get the proposal approved.

At the last meeting in October in Slovenia, 38 countries favored the creation of the sanctuary and 24 were against, but three quarters of the votes was required. Besides Brazil, the proposal is supported by South Africa, Argentina, Uruguay and Gabon, among others.
