Norwegian zoologists found about 30 plastic bags and other plastic debris in the stomach of a Cuvier's beaked whale that had become stranded on the southwest coast of the country. The scientists tried to save the animal, but were unsuccessful. According to Terje Lislevand, a researcher at the University of Bergen, the cetacean weighed two tons and was visibly sick.

The United Nations estimates that 8 million tons of plastic waste is dumped into the oceans each year - the equivalent of a garbage truck every minute, according to a report by the World Economic Forum. The trend is that this rate will increase, especially in countries with an emerging economy where waste recycling policies do not reach a large part of the population.
