Regulatory News

The Brazilian government has given the green light for states to hold auctions this year to privatize their natural gas distributors. New investors has the goal of mass consumption of the product in the country, since the natural gas channeled is present in only 3 million of a total of 68 million residences.

Experts believe that privatization makes room for better regulation in the sector. "Today, there is a conflict of interest because sometimes the state regulates on behalf of consumers, others, for their own right, since they are the majority in the companies," said Edmar Almeida, of the Energy Economics Group of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), in an interview with the newspaper O Globo.
