The presidents of Brazil, Michel Temer, and Paraguay, Horacio Cartes, signed an international cooperation agreement between the Federal Police of Brazil and the National Anti-Drug Secretariat of Paraguay. The purpose of the agreement is to combat criminal organizations operating in both countries in contraband and smuggling, including cigarette, money laundering and international trafficking in drugs and weapons.

In recent weeks, the Brazilian government has mobilized troops from the National Security Force to operate on the border with Paraguay. According to investigations, that is where many of the illicit products getting to big cities like Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo come in.
