In a major operation to combat cigarette smuggling, 22 people were arrested in the state of Goiás, in the Brazilian Midwest. In the action, which counted on agents from the Federal Highway Police, Military Police and Federal Revenue Office, 15 trucks were seized that carried an estimated load of R$50 million (US$16.1 million). Of the vehicles, 13 were stolen.

According to investigations, the cargo had left Paraguay to supply markets in Goiás, Distrito Federal and Tocantins. A total of 8 million cigarette packs were seized.
