The Brazilian government has begun Operation Wall 2017 in the region of the triple border between Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, with the objective of reinforcing the fight against crimes such as smuggling and trafficking of drugs, weapons and ammunition. Among the illegal products that circulate the most in the region are cigarettes, mainly produced in Paraguay. Contraband cigarettes already occupy more than 40% of the Brazilian consumer market.

Coordinated by the Brazilian Internal Revenue Service, responsible for border control, the joint action brings together the Federal, Federal Highway, Civil, and Military Police, as well as the Armed Forces. Sniffing dogs and X-ray equipment help agents that act not only on large highways but also on rural roads in the region.
