In the state of Parana, the volume of smuggled cigarettes seized by theFederal Highway Police grew by 32.5% by the end of September this year whencompared to the same period in 2016. The total number of packages removed fromcirculation increased from 12.6 million to 16.7 million. Just this week, twoshipments originating in Paraguay were intercepted by the police, with anestimated load of R$3.5 million (US$1.1 million).

In an interview with CBN radio, Inspector Fernando Oliveira pointed outthat cigarette smuggling feeds other crimes, such as trafficking in arms anddrugs, and theft of cars and trucks. "Many times these vehicles are takento the border region of Paraguay, where they are prepared for transporting theproduct," he explained.
