A military police officer was arrested on charges of being part of a cigarette smuggling ring operating in the three southern states of the country: Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. Suspected of providing logistical support and security for the gang, the police officer was detained during Operation Cigarettes without Borders, in which five more people were arrested.

According to investigations, the cigarettes produced in Paraguay entered Brazil along the border with Parana and were then taken by truck to Santa Catarina, where the cargo was distributed to other states.
