Civilian police seized a cargo of four tons of contraband cigarettes from Paraguay at a warehouse in the city of Duque de Caxias, Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Region. The discovery came in the same week that a television crew spotted the sale of one of the brands stored in the warehouse on the streets of downtown Rio in front of the Secretary of Public Safety building.

The seized merchandise is from brands produced in factories of former Paraguayan president Horácio Cártes. According to the Institute of Economic and Social Development of Borders, 38% of the cigarettes sold in Rio de Janeiro are smuggled in.
